Shockwaves in Different Specialties I: Urology and Sexual Medicine

KEYNOTE Dr. Yao Chi Chuang Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan New frontiers of extracorporeal shock wave medicine in urology from bench to clinical studies Abstract
Yao-Chi Chuang is a Professor in the Division of Urology at the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and School of Medicine, College of Medicine, National Sun Yat-sen University Taiwan.

After graduating from the National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine in 1988, Dr Chuang completed his residency in urology at Veterans General Hospital, Taipei. He was awarded a research Fellowship in the Department of Pharmacology and Urology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1999–2000, where he worked with Professor deGroat, Chancellor, and Yoshimura on the study of physiology and pharmacology of lower urinary tract.

Dr Chuang is a member of both the Surgical and Urology Associations of Taiwan. He is immediate past president of Taiwanese Continence Society.
He has a particular interest in neuro-urology, female urology, and minimal invasive treatment for prostate disease. Dr Chuang is continuous working on the research of IC/PBS, OAB, UAB, DM related lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD), and use of low energy shock wave, botulinum toxin, and liposome for the treatment of LUTD.

Dr Chuang has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, and he also serves as reviewers for many scientific journals. He has been invited to give lectures more than 100 times in the national and international meeting.

Dr Chuang has won awards from Lapides Essay Contest for 6 times, and Taiwan Urological Association for 9 times. Dr Chuang has received research grant from Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan since 2001, and NIH from 2003 to 2005.

Dr Chuang is an editorial member of International Urology and Nephrology, Asia Journal of Urology, and LUTS. Dr Chuang is the chief editor of Urological Science, official journal of Taiwan Urological Association.
KEYNOTE/RECORDED Dr. Irwin Goldstein San Diego Sexual Medicine, USA Low intensity Shock Wave Therapy (LISWT) for improvement of erectile function: prospective study and engineering studies Abstract
Dr. Goldstein has been involved with sexual dysfunction research since the late 1970's. He has authored more than 350 publications as well as multiple book chapters and edited 7 textbooks in the field. His interests include surgery for dyspareunia, sexual health management post cancer treatment, persistent genital arousal disorder/genital dysesthesia, physiologic investigation of sexual function in men and women, and diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction in men and women. Dr. Goldstein is Director of Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital, Clinical Professor of Surgery and Voluntary Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Sciences at University of California San Diego, and practices medicine at San Diego Sexual Medicine. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Sexual Medicine Reviews and past Editor of The Journal of Sexual Medicine. He is a Past President of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH) and of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA). He holds a degree in engineering from Brown University and received his medical degree from McGill University. The World Association for Sexual Health awarded the Gold Medal to Dr. Goldstein in 2009 in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the field, in 2012 he received the ISSWSH Award for Distinguished Service in Women’s Sexual Health, in 2013 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the SMSNA, and in 2014 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Sexual Medicine. He is happily married to his college sweetheart Sue, and together they have three children and five grandchildren.
KEYNOTE/RECORDED Dr. Jens Rassweiler SLK Kliniken Heilbronn, Germany Low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy in the wound management of Fournier gangrene - a new approach Abstract
Prof. Rassweiler started his Urological Education 1982 at Katharinenhospital Stuttgart. From 1988 to 1994 he was Vice-chair of the Department of Urology Medical School Mannheim). He was involved in the clinical introduction of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy including three generations of lithotripters. 1992 he was the first German Urologist to perform a laparoscopic nephrectomy. 1994 he became Chairman of the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at SLK Kliniken Heilbronn, University of Heidelberg. 2020 he was president of the German Society of Urology (DGU). 2022 he was elected as chair of the faculty of Urology and Andrology of the Danube Private University in Krems, Austria.

KEYNOTE/RECORDED Dr. Tomáš Nedělka Rehabilitation Centre of M.D. Jiří Nedělka, Czech Republic ESWT in Neurology – where we are in 2023 Abstract
Born in July 18, 1980 in Strakonice, Southern Bohemia, Czech Republic.

Graduated at Charles University Prague, 1st Faculty of Medicine in 2004.

Main topic of his scientific work was originally autonomic nervous system disorders, he founded the Autonomic Research Center within the Department of Neurology of Charles University, 2nd Medical Faculty, now 1 of 2 centres of its kind within the Czech Republic.

Finished his specialisation in Neurology in 2009 and later on in Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine. Done his Ph.D. in 2017 with a topic “Recurrence analysis of heart rate variability in early diagnostics of autonomic cardiovascular neuropathy” and started to work as assistant professor in Czech Technical University, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering.

Since 2008, he was attracted by the shockwave technology, first RPW, then focused ESWT, and gained first hands on experience and promising results in variety of musculoskeletal disorders. Loyal to his degree in Neurology, he started to use the method in more or less experimental indications - low back pain, radiculopathy, peripheral nerves or spasticity.

Member of International Society for Medical Shockwave Treatment (ISMST) since 2012, vice-president of the ISMST 2019-2021, ISMST congress president 2022. Member of Czech Athletic Federation medical team, Czech Neurological Society and European Academy of Neurology.

Author of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Invited speaker to many conferences all over the world. ISMST Certified Instructional Course instructor.

Except his university career, he continues to work as a specialist in Neurology, Rehabilitation and Sports medicine in a private rehabilitation center, together with founder and father Jiří.

Wilderness and tactical medicine enthusiast, instructor of various SWAT team and SOF units in tactical first aid training. Member of Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA), USA.

He loves to do sports with his growing children, mainly alpine skiing, hiking, mountain and road biking. Plays flutes, bagpipes and other woodwind instruments.
KEYNOTE Dr. Xiancheng Yu Imperial College London, UK Blast-induced cerebrospinal fluid cavitation: a potential mechanism for blast-induced traumatic brain injury Abstract
Dr Xiancheng Yu is a research associate in the Human Experience, Analysis and Design Lab at
Imperial College London. In 2020, he received his PhD in biomechanics from the Centre for Blast
Injury Studies (CBIS) at Imperial College London, which was funded by the Royal British Legion to
further the research about blast injury patterns, treatments and recovery and better ways of
protecting military personnels.
Dr Yu’s research focuses on the biomechanics of traumatic brain injury, which are induced by blast
and impact loadings. He has done extensive work to investigate an understudied mechanism for
blast-induced traumatic brain injury: the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cavitation. Both advanced
experimental and computational techniques have been used to demonstrate the occurrence,
mechanism, threshold and implication of blast-induced CSF cavitation.
INVITED Dr. Karin Freitag DKF Clinic, Spain Effect of transcranial pulse stimulation for the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease – The Spanish experience with a control group study Abstract
Counting with more than 30 years as Rheumatologist and Sports Medicine Specialist, Dr. Karin
Freitag has stablished her position as a pioneer in regenerative medicine translational
medicine, specially applied to the musculoskeletal system. Her passion for research has led Dr.
Freitag to set a Regenerative Medicine Unit among Clínica DKF, her Clinic of which she is the
Director, becoming a national referent of the most advanced treatments in this field.
Dr. Freitag ́s pursue in researching for non-invasive treatments for orthopaedic
applications has led her to investigate the biological effect of shockwave therapy. In 2011 Dr.
Freitag co-founded the Spanish Society for Shockwave Therapy stablishing herself as president
until 2015. In 2021 Dr. Freitag was chosen as board member of the prestigious International
Society Medical Shockwave Therapy (ISMST).

Marianne Koolen – MD PhD
Nowadays I am an orthopedic resident – specialization paediatric
orthopedics, with a PhD in ‘Building Better Bone’, as I performed
research on the complexity of shockwaves and bone regeneration
for some years. Also, I am a board member of the Dutch Society for
Medical Shock Wave Therapy (NVMST, www.shockwave.nu).
Recently, the NVMST has been working on factsheets, to create an overview of the current
evidence and provide guidelines for Dutch healthcare professionals. On top of that we have
launched an advertisement campaign to create awareness on shockwave therapy around
the Netherlands. But most of all we have been working together to facilitate the 26 th World
Congress of the International Society for Medical Shockwave Treatment in AMSTERDAM. A
city of bikes, history, art, canals and in 2024 749 years old! We hope to welcome you and
show you the lovely and diverse city of Amsterdam.

KEYNOTE Prof. Hamid Hosano Kumamoto University, Japan New prospects for non-invasive diagnostics/therapies with medical shock waves Abstract
Hamid Hosano received his Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering from Tohoku University,
Sendai, Japan, in 1999.
He was a Lecturer at Sharif University of Technology, from 1990 to 1996. He served as
Research Associate and Associate Professor at Tohoku University, from 1999 to 2006. From
2006 to 2008, he was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Bioengineering, University of
Washington, Seattle.
In 2008, he joined Kumamoto University as a Professor, where he is currently a faculty
member of the Biomaterials and Bioelectrics Department, the Institute of Industrial
Nanomaterials, and the Graduate School of Science and Technology.
His research interests are shock waves, pulsed power, and their biomedical application;
bioelectrics; micro-fluidics; therapeutic ultrasound; and drug/vaccine/nanoparticle delivery.
KEYNOTE/RECORDED Prof. Johannes Holfeld Innstruck Medical University, Austria Direct cardiac shockwave therapy
Johannes Holfeld is the founder and head of CARE - Cardiac Regeneration Research Lab, at Innsbruck Medical University. He graduated from Medical University of Vienna (MD) and was a research fellow at the Cell Signaling Center, Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Texas (Supervisor: nobel laureate Prof. Ferid Murad). He is a senior consultant at the Department of Cardiac Surgery and besides his clinical program lead for conventional heart failure surgery dedicated to translational research. This includes a focus on myocardial regeneration and the role of the innate immune system in cardiovascular disease. His pre-clinical research led to successful Phase II and III trials in heart failure patients, for which he acts as a PI (www.cast-trial.com).

Dr. Cheng received his Ph.D. degree from the Graduate Institute of Biotechnology, National Chung Hsing University. He joined the Division of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Research of National Health Research Institutes and Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital as a postdoctoral fellow in 2004 and 2008 respectively. During this period, he learned the valuable characteristic of new drug research, protein science, cancer cell biology, membrane protein study, genetic study and survey. In 2013, Dr. Cheng collaborated with Professor Ching-Jen Wang at the Center for Shockwave Medicine and Tissue Engineering in Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to study the mechanisms of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) and cell therapy for musculoskeletal diseases, including osteochondral defect, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Stecco Carla, born the 16th of September 1977 in Arzignano. Medical degree cum laude in 2002 at the Padua University. Specialization cum laude in Orthopaedic surgery at the Padua University in January 2008.
Orthopedic Surgeon, Professor of Human Anatomy and Movement Sciences at the University of Padova. Founder Member of the Fascial Manipulation Association and of the Fascial Research Society. Member of the Italian Society of Anatomy and Histology and of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy. The scientific activity is devoted to the study of the anatomy of the human fasciae from a macroscopic, histologic and pathologic point of view. From 2000 she organizes and personally holds theoretical-practical courses about fascial anatomy and Fascial Manipulation technique both in Italy and in other countries. Author of more than 180 in extenso papers about the fascial anatomy, 170 indexed in Pubmed. Author of various books about the Fascial Manipulation (Piccin ed), translated in 11 languages, and of the first photographic atlas about the human fasciae (2015, Elsevier ed.).

Dr. med.Hannes Müller-Ehrenberg (MD) born in Mainz (Germany)
received his medical education in Cologne (Germany). He trained as an
orthopedic surgeon in England and Germany where he began to pursue
a specialized interest in trigger point therapy. After receiving his
orthopedic specialization degree, Dr. Mueller-Ehrenberg opened his own
orthopedic Office in Münster (Germany). In the last 20 years, he has
been actively involved in the training of myofascial trigger point therapy
teaching the „Swiss approach“. Together with some noted German
experts of pain and myofascial trigger points, including Prof. Siegfried
Mense, he founded the German Myofascial Pain Society MGMS
(Medizinische Gesellschaft für myofasziale Schmerzen) of whom he was
the President from 2006 to 2016. He is presently on many national and
international congresses as an active speaker. He was the first medical
therapist to acknowledge the great advantages of focused shockwave
therapy ESWT as a tool in the diagnosis and treatment of trigger points
and myofascial pain.
